WB Games Studios Might Split After AT&T/Discovery Deal
by Roy Arkon on May 18, 2021 :: 0 IGN have reported yesterday that WB Games might split their studios due to a $43 billion merger deal between AT&T (who owns Warner Media and all of their daughter companies, including WB Games) and Discovery, for the plan to create a new, standalone company, after which some of the gaming studios of WB Games will stay with them, while the rest will go to the new company. This of course includes NetherRealm Studios, the creators of both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises.
Stephen Totilo of IGN came with the this Tweet, while Julia Alexander then came in to correct some of the news on the matter.
Author's opinion: As everyone knows, NRS have been very quite in the last several months regarding any updates for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate every since the MK11U update came out with the exception of a couple of patches, including the one that we got just last week, and with the only new content that we got for MK11U is just the new Gear pieces that you can unlock in the 2nd rotation of the Kombat League seasons, but no new DLC updates with new characters or skins. This can very will be the reason for that, as obviously it would be very difficult for NRS to work on MK11U while they don't even know who will be their publishing bosses from now on.
That being said, I'm sure some of you will be freaked out regarding the future of NRS and MK, but there's no need to worry. Mortal Kombat is a highly successful franchise, with MK11U also got over 8 million copies sold as of October of last year. There is no way that no one will keep capitalizing on MK for it's guarantee revenue. And everyone knows that no other company is better for making MK, than NRS so no one is gonna close them. Not to mention that NRS did tease new work just a few months ago, which can be a new update to MK11U.
So no one should be worried, NRS and MK are perfectly safe. Injustice might be in a more questionable position though since it is a DC Universe franchise, which means it might get over due to the DC license being restricted between the studios after the deal, but we will have to wait and see for that one.

To bookmarksMortal Kombat Trilogy is a fighting game released by Midway in 1996 as the second update to Mortal Kombat 3 (the first being Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and PCs. Further versions were also released for the Game.com and R-Zone. It features a similar basic gameplay system and the same story as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but adds characters and stages restored from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. New additions to the game included the 'Aggressor' bar, and a new finishing move called Brutality, a long combination of attacks that ends with the opponent exploding. The game was met with mixed reviews upon release.
Gameplay
Mortal Kombat Trilogy introduces the Aggressor bar, which fills as the combatants fight (twice as much if the opponent is blocking). Once the bar is filled, it grants the character fast movement and greater attack damage for a short period of time.
Many characters gained additional special moves. Some were simple edits of existing moves (such as Stryker throwing two grenades instead of one), while others were unused animations never implemented in their intended previous games. These special moves included MK Kano's Knife Spin move, MKII Kung Lao's Air Torpedo, Goro's Spinning Punch move, Raiden's Lightning that shoots from behind the opponent, and Baraka's Blade Spin move. Additionally, Shao Kahn gained a throw and grab-and-punch move, and Motaro gained a proper throw move. Sub-Zero's famous 'Spine Rip' Fatality reappears in the game but is completely censored, as the screen blacks out with only the 'Fatality' text visible. This was due to avoid having to re-animate the fatality for this game.
Trilogy adds the 'Brutality' finishing move, which requires the player to perform an 11-button combo in order to rapidly beat on their opponent until they explode. (Brutalities have been previously featured in the Mega Drive/Genesis and SNES ports of UMK3.) All of the arenas that featured a Stage Fatality are featured in this game, except the Pit II.
